Medication
A Difficult Decision

When you're confused about taking medication for a condition that seems entirely psychological

Anxiety disorders are classified as psychiatric disorders. Many of the symptoms of anxiety disorders appear completely psychological or appear caused by psychological problems. Some people believe anxiety disorders are entirely psychological disorders. Some people believe they are completely physiological. Most people, including doctors and researchers, believe anxiety disorders have both physiological and psychological components.

It's easy to be confused when there are mental health professionals (as well as people who have recovered and some researchers) who think anxiety disorders are entirely psychological disorders. It can be difficult to understand why some people recover from anxiety disorders without medication, but other people need it for many years.

Add to the confusion that there is no one theory for the cause of each anxiety disorder. Most people want to know why they have anxiety disorders. There is no easy answer, however, because there are many possible causes.

Your confusion, however, should not keep you from taking medication prescribed by your doctor. It is true that medication alone will not make most people better. Recovery often involves many elements which often need modifying over time. However, medication is a crucial part of recovery for most, particularly when the condition is severe. It is usually difficult to practice coping techniques and other recovery methods when in the deepest pit of a severe anxiety disorder. Medication can help you reach a point where you are capable of learning and coping.

As for whether or not anxiety disorders have a physiological component, the truth is really out there if you're willing to research and explore. Find out as much as you can about your disorder and its physiological and psychological components.

And . . . look into your own mind, body and soul for the answers. The mind and body are inextricably connected. Our brains, after all, are just as physical as our kidneys and lungs. We are made of neurotransmitters and hormones and other chemicals. Medication affects these chemicals and has the ability to help us become well again. Just because some people choose not to use medication does not mean you are weak if you choose to use it. Quite the contrary -- you are strong for educating yourself and using every tool possible to reach recovery.
