Panic disorder can feel like it is literally taking your breath away. One of the most frightening symptoms of panic disorder is feeling like you cannot breathe. This often occurs during a panic attack, making the person feel as if they are not able to get enough air into their lungs. Feelings of breathlessness can be terrifying and will often escalate into increased panic and anxiety. Even though it can be very scary at the time, this shortness of breath or hyperventilation is not life-threatening.
