The benefits of yoga for panic disorder were recently a topic of discussion on the forum. I couldn't agree more that yoga can be an effective way to relieve stress and increase deep relaxation. Of course yoga can help improve flexibility and strength, but it can also be an effective coping technique when faced with panic attacks.

There are many aspects of yoga that panic disorder sufferer may find helpful in managing symptoms:

  • Yoga teaches deep breathing. Learning to breathe this way can help calm a restless mind, alleviate nervousness, and slow one's rapid breathing down.
  • Yoga involves movement and balance. By focusing on the body, one can escape the anxious and negative thinking of the mind. Plus, exercise has been found to be an effective way to combat stress.
  • If you are comfortable taking a yoga class, it can be a great opportunity to meet other people and feel connected to a sense of community.
  • The overall practice of yoga can illicit the relaxation response, where both the body and mind can gain a sense of calm and ease.

Have you ever tried yoga? What, if any, benefits have you found to practicing yoga? What activities do you find the most helpful in managing your panic attacks?

I’ve tried Yoga numerous times. It makes me more anxious and I’ve given it up. My mind races and tends to focus on the difficulty of the poses, and what I can’t do. Music & movement work much better for me.

I had the same problem at first too, until I tried a more relaxing form of yoga. It took my several classes before I found a teacher who helped me let go and take my focus off of the poses.

I love yoga, the problem is that I stopped doing it. Once I get started on things that I like to do, it is relaxing and enjoyable. My biggest problem is getting into something and staying with it.
I think that yoga is great for every part of your body and also your mind. A great way to unwind and relax.

I use yoga DVD at home and find it works well. I don’t have to deal with all of the skinny folks in yoga clothes!
